Q. Am I entitled to an NHS Eye Examination?

A.

You qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test if:
  • you’re aged under 16
  • you’re aged 16, 17 or 18 and are in full-time education
  • you’re aged 60 or over
  • you’re registered as partially sighted (sight impaired) or blind (severely sight impaired)
  • you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • you’re 40 or over, and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma
  • you’ve been advised by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that you’re at risk of glaucoma
  • you’re a prisoner on leave from prison
  • you're eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher - your optometrist (optician) can advise you about your entitlement

You’re also entitled to a free NHS sight test if you:

  • receive Income Support
  • receive Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (not Contribution-based)
  • receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • receive Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (not Contribution-based)
  • are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
  • on a low income and named on a valid HC2 (full help) or HC3 (partial help) certificate

Q. Do I need a new sight test to buy new spectacles or prescription sunglasses?

A. Not always. Check your current prescription to see if it is still in date. This should be clearly marked  with the date of your previous test and how long before you need to be tested again - often 1 or 2 years.

Q. What do I do if I have any further questions?

A. Telephone us on (01206) 820202 or send an email.

Q. Do you offer Eye Examination?

A. Yes, we offer a full range of Optician services.

Q. Why should I come to Wivenhoe Eyecare?

A. We are a friendly, family run, local business with competitive pricing and easy access.

Q. Can you accommodate wheelchairs?

A. Yes, we have our own car park, ground floor testing rooms and wheelchair ramps for access.

Q. From what age should I book my child for an Eye Examination?

A. We recommend all children have a full eye examination before they start school or sooner should your GP recommend it.

Q. Can I re-use my current Spectacle frame?

A. Obviously this depends on the condition of the frame and we would be happy to discuss this with you. Be aware that sometimes this can be a false economy if the manufacturer is no longer able to provide parts in the event of a future breakage.

Q. What payment methods do you accept?

A. We can accept payment by credit or debit card and cash only. We do not accept American Express or Cheques.

Q. Do I get free NHS spectacles?

A. The NHS provides you with a Voucher if you qualify. At Wivenhoe Eyecare this can be used to cover the cost of certain Lenses. You will need to pay for the Spectacle frame yourself.
